My child is the complaintant

Bringing a complaint against another student is in many ways harder than being the accused student. As a complainant, your child is likely facing extensive social pressure about the case in addition to the physical and psychological consequences of the incident. You should be very proud of her because most students are not confident enough in themselves tohold other students accountable, no matter how egregious the conduct. She will be asked to act as her own advocate and make a case against another student, which, if successful, can have what is seen as damaging impact on that student. There are unique health and safety concerns that she will have for whichthe school should be equipped to provide support. The institution has obligations to your student either in its own policies or, for some allegations, in state and federal law, but there are often additional resources and processes available.Even if your child is successful in her complaint, there will be additional pressures once the hearing is over, but these are small hurdles compared to the benefits of success.
